a little DVD/VCD help?

I've download a chunk of stuff that I want to put on DVD, VCD, SVCD, etc., so I can play it out on my TV. I like to watch my video on the big screen, while surfing and such on the small screen.

The files I have are a mix of .avi and .mpg. Most of them show up in VLC as XVID or mpgv video, mpga audio.

I'm looking for some simple How-To style guides for taking these files and burning them onto a disc that my Philips DVP642 or Toshiba SD-KV540 can handle.

I'd rather DVD than CD, for putting more time on each disc, but other than that -- I don't really care which way works.

I have iDVD 5.0.1, Toast Titanium 8.0.1, Mac OS X 10.4.10, and a PowerBook G4 (1.67GHz, 2GB RAM) with SuperDrive (no Dual-Layer)....

Any clues out there?
